Four-door Optima T-Hybrid (turbo hybrid) celebrates premiere at the Paris Motor Show. At the heart of its power plant – diesel 1.7 CRDI, which works in tandem with a compact electric motor-generator connected to the crankshaft engine using a belt drive. This motor is powered by a set of lead-carbon battery with a voltage of 48 V (a kind of well-known lead-acid batteries, but with the special structure of the electrodes, increased capacity and greater survivability).
Lead-carbon batteries have been chosen by engineers for the relative cheapness. And besides, they do not need active cooling system. There is also the environmental aspect: these batteries are easier to recycle at end of life. Thanks to the motor-generator diesel in Optima T-Hybrid was actually a full system start / stop. But not only the internal combustion engine is suppressed at the stop. At low speeds sedan can go to one electric, despite the fact that their system Koreans call “soft” (mild) hybrid, and not complete.
